What We Do

Halesworth Town Council is the elected local authority and is the first tier of local government. Elections are held every four years to elect the 12 Town Councillors. The Chairman and Vice Chair are elected by fellow Councillors and usually serve a year in office.

The role of the Council is to represent the wishes and aspirations of Halesworth residents to the District Council and also to inform residents of local and national policy and legislation changes which will have an impact on them and Halesworth’s activities. The Town Council also develops contacts with all authorities and other organisations which can have can influence on the social, economic and physical wellbeing of Halesworth and its residents.

WHO DOES WHAT?

It can be confusing as to which Local Government Organisation does what...

HALESWORTH TOWN COUNCIL

The Town Council has a major role in acting as a ‘watch-dog’ for the town and in reporting matters to the principal authorities at Waveney District and Suffolk County Councils .The Council is consulted on all Planning Applications, Highway matters and the delivery of other services to Halesworth. The Council supports local voluntary bodies; can initiate cultural, leisure and environmental projects and can secure funding from outside bodies for the benefit of local initiatives. The Council is also responsible for allotments and the local Wednesday Market in Halesworth.

The Town Council has few powers but does its best to influence decisions taken by the District and County Councils for the benefit of Halesworth and its residents.

Please look at the website to get a full flavour of the Town Council’s role!
