Barrow Crossing Guidelines

The Station Barrow Crossing

Due to the efforts of many, Network Rail has given the barrow crossing at the station a reprieve. Please note that it is only a reprieve. Network Rail has just provided the Town Council with their guidance of how to use the crossing safely and also the plans for positioning the barriers.

“Network Rail’s guidance on how to use the barrow crossing safely

  • The MOST important advice is obvious – STOP, LOOK and LISTEN before you cross
  • Only use the crossing if you are a station user – it is not a public right of way
  • Cross only if there are no trains in either platform
  • Get off your bike before coming through the station or using the crossing
  • Keep to the crossing area and off the track
  • Always check there are no trains approaching before crossing even if others are crossing in front of you
  • Keep your dog on a lead when using the crossing
  • Don’t obstruct the gate on the crossing approach (This is for when we have the new gates installed)
  • Always keep moving on the crossing”

These guidelines must be followed so as to ensure Network Rail does not have any excuse to remove the crossing. So, if cyclists continue to cycle along the platform and cycle across the rails and pedestrians cross when a train is approaching the station or walk in front of or behind a train when it is at the platform, Network Rail will remove the crossing and put barriers up. Then everybody will have to use the steep route over the road bridge to get from one platform to the other or from Dairy Hill into town and back.

Don’t abuse it or we’ll all lose it.
