This week, an important change was made to the signs at the beginning of the Bridge Street/Thoroughfare one-way Pedestrian Zone. A new sign was added on each side, confirming that parking is not allowed at any time:
This change was made by Suffolk Highways in response to almost a year’s lobbying by the Thoroughfare Working Group, which was set up by Halesworth Town Council to find ways of reducing traffic in the Thoroughfare. The new signs help to reinforce the existing rules that vehicles are only allowed to enter the Pedestrian Zone for loading and unloading, access to residents’ homes, or if displaying a blue badge. Vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are not permitted to enter at all.
Suffolk Police are encouraging people who witness inappropriate or anti-social driving – for example, driving the wrong way down a one-way street – to report it to them. Anyone with relevant dash-cam footage should contact the police on http://www.suffolk.police.uk/contact-us/report-something.
